Tips for Buying Area Rugs

Area rugs can add warmth and a punch of color to an otherwise drab room. They also provide functionality, allowing people a place to wipe their feet. Area rugs are available in almost every shape and size. Depending on what your needs are, there are dozens of fabric choices as well. Since area rugs are so versatile, you can find them within almost any price range.

When choosing an area rug, it is wise to first decide what size you need. Measure the area you want the rug to cover. Consider what shape you want. If you are placing the rug in front of a door, you will probably want a small rectangle. Runners are available to cover long, skinny areas. If the rug will be in the center of the room, then you can choose from a circle, oval, square, or rectangular rug.

Next, consider whether the rug will be in a high-traffic area. Also, you need to decide if you want to wash the rug at home, or if you are willing to pay to have it professionally cleaned. Then you can determine what fabric to choose for your rug.

If you are interested in adding pizzazz to the room, consider getting a patterned rug. You can also play down the rug by getting a solid colored one, possibly in a muted tone. Again, you will want to consider if the rug is in a high-traffic area. If it is, you will want to purchase a rug that will not show dirt as well.

As you can see, area rugs are a great way to change the overall look of the room. Since there are so many options, you can spend as much or as little as you want.
