Tips for Buying Kitchen Counter Tops

Countertops are a very big decision in the design or remodeling of a kitchen. Kitchen counter tops are made of materials that are very strong and usually easy to take care of. When looking to buy a new countertop, the material that you choose will depend a lot on what you can afford and the appearance and the qualities you are looking for.

The standard kitchen counter top is 24 inches deep and 36 inches high. Many have backsplashes along the back part to protect the wall. Most countertops combine a base of plywood or particle board that stretches across the top of the cabinet and the finish surface material. There is also mastic, mortar or grout and glue that are used to attach the surface to the base and keep it from being penetrated by water and stains.

The edges of countertops can differ greatly depending of the materials that they are made of. The square edge is most common, especially with wood, tile and laminate. Bullnose edges make countertops look strong and solid and are also safe and practical.

Bevels give a less expensive countertop an added style. Ogee edges are more decorative. Details of metal, wood or a different color will give a decorative appearance to the edge. Edges can cost up to $50 for each linear foot, so sometimes the final decision on the edge is based on the budget allowed.

The different types of countertops include: laminate, ceramic, solid surfacing, natural stones and woods. Laminates and ceramic countertops come in many different colors. Solid surfacing is very strong and easy to care for. Woods are applied in butcher block. Natural stone countertops are most expensive but are very long lasting.
