Tips for Buying Video Games & Systems
There are three main video game systems on the market currently. Available to you are Sony's PlayStation 3, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. The PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Nintendo Wii each utilize motion sensing controllers, though the Wii does to to a far greater extent. The PS3 and Xbox 360 each feature what is known as next-generation graphics, which allow for far more in-depth game play. Prices and capabilities between these systems vary widely, but gaming intent should take precedence when choosing the correct system for you.
The PS3 is available in three versions based on hard-drive space. The PS3 comes equipped with a blu-ray player, and may also be used for viewing blu-ray movies. The PS3 has the best graphics of the two next-gen systems, but comes with a price tag around double that of the other systems. Most PS3 games fall into the standard war, fighting and car-based categories, featuring better graphics and more ability to manipulate the boards and scenery.
Xbox 360 is also available in three versions. These versions are known as the Arcade, Pro, and Elite. Each version is progressively more expensive, but each version features more memory and capabilities. The Elite and Pro versions are each fully backwards compatible with regular Xbox games. Xbox live allows the option to download movies and expand games. Xbox 360 games include next-gen graphics with more manipulation of the backgrounds much like the PS3. Games include war, fighting, adventure and car-based varieties, much like those of the PS3.
The Nintendo Wii is a prime choice for family play. This system is based off of the concept of involving standard non-gamers by creating a fully interactive experience. Play centers around the "Wii-mote," a remote shaped controller with simple buttons which works mainly through motion. Available games include interactive sports games like tennis and golf, trivia, carnival games, racing games, pirate adventures and multiple versions of Star Wars with realistic lightsaber fights. Game purists may bawk at the less than current graphics of most games, but for family fun, Wii scores serious points.
