Tips for Selecting Art

If you are considering adding artwork to an area in your home you should always go with the art that makes you feel the best.  You shouldn't be worried about what is “in” right now or what the public finds attractive.  The right artwork in your room can actually make you use a room more often, be happier while you are in it and draw a room together.  So choose carefully, find colors that fit the current décor of the room, while still sticking to your personal tastes and styles.

The placement of artwork in a room is essential to making the most of the effects it can bring.  While a well-placed piece of art can liven a room and warm a normal drab feeling, a poorly hung work of art can actually make a room seem chaotic, messy and unorganized.  It isn't hard to avoid the many mistakes of proper art work placement, you just need to use a little discretion and control is choosing art and location.

You should always look at the available space that you have in the room or on the wall that you are planning hanging your work of art.  The piece of art you select for this space should be proportional to the other pieces of art around it and also the blank space that will be showing.

For example, if you have a large, blank wall, putting a small painting in the center, no matter how beautiful, will be lost in the blank space around it.  In contrast if you have a very small or narrow wall space and you try to put a large or many small pictures in that area, they will seem crowded or out of place.  Each of these problems will hide the beauty and diminish the effects of a great piece of art in your home.

Other than the wall space you have, you will also need to consider the size and arrangement of the other pieces that will be around this focal point.  The best way to size and arrange these pieces is by using a piece of chalk.  Hopefully using an assistant, you can trace around all of the pieces where you want them on the wall, and then stand back and look at them and their placement.

The great thing about chalk is, if you hate what you are looking at you can simply wipe it away.  Another nice thing is you will know exactly what you wall will look like before you start putting nails in the wall.

Small Groupings and Home Decor Sizes

You will only want to consider a large piece of art if you have a huge area to hang it in.  Large expanses of wall space do not need a large picture however.  You can just as easily choose several smaller pieces to place in that same area and since most large works of art carry a pretty hefty price tag, you will end up saving a bunch of money.

When placing several smaller items together, consider using a repeating theme.
This can be the same scene at different times of the day or in different seasons or pictures of the same person performing different activities.  This type of art collection will add a personal touch to the wall hangings in your room.

Browse through several different stores, including online in search of the piece of art that you feel will fit best in your space.  There are many different styles and materials that can create a very appealing collage of artwork.  These options include metallic or wooden picture frames, wrought iron designs, small shelves, scones, candles and tons more.  Simply stick to what you like and organize it the way that looks best to you.

The shape of the artwork you are picking out is going to be just as the color and size that you choose.  The reason for this is because different shapes and lines in your artwork will have different effects on the eyes and human brain.  Horizontal lines will certainly cause people's eyes to be drawn around the room while vertical lines will draw the eyes up and down, creating a focal point.  Using these lines to your advantage can really create an incredible feel to a room.  This will also allow you to let each picture or piece of art to guide your guests' eyes to another as they look around the room they will naturally be drawn to each piece.

The more harsh and long each of the lines are, the more strain it will cause on the eyes.  If you are looking to have a calming or soothing room, you will want to avoid most of these harsh, sharp lines and angles.  Sticking with ovals and circles or any other curved lines will be easier on the eyes and actually have the ability to calm those who enter the room.

Hanging Decor at the Proper Height

After you've bought the artwork you want to put up and have decided how many pieces you will be hanging you'll need to determine the height.  If you are hanging one large piece of work you will want to have the center of that piece at eye level.  If you are of an “under average” height, you will not want to use your eye level, but rather the average eye level.

If you are going to be putting up a collage or collection of pieces up, the center of the collection should be at eye level.  Again, always plan how you are going to hang this piece either by marking the walls, drawing it out on paper, or laying the pieces out on the floor before you start hammer nails into your wall.  Doing this will ensure you have the best look you can get, while doing it with the least amount of frustration.
