Tips for Decorating a Baby Nursery

  1. Remember not everything has to be in the room right now, especially if the baby is still on the way. You can always add things as time goes on.
  2.  Use caution when installing permanent fixtures. You need to think long-term, “It is unwise/unsafe to choose gender specific colors and toys. The only exception to this rule is if you already are certain the sex of the child and you aren't going to be having any more after this one. These unisex colors would include light green, cream white, turquoise or light blue. Another option for you would be to paint a mural of some kind, or have a themed room, but again, keep it something both boys and girls would be interested in.
  3. Don't forget to put some accessories in the room. Things like blankets, lampshades and curtains will add excellent color to the room and make it a little more personal. You will also want to make sure that there is at least one adult chair in the room for you. You will probably be spending a lot of time in that room, whether you realize that now or not.
  4.  Toys will accumulate faster than you could have ever imagined, so be sure that you have tons of storage room. Kid friendly items would include Tupperware bins, toy boxes with light, slow fall covers, benches or chairs that double as shelving or toy boxes are excellent ways to save some space. You will also want to keep most of this stuff lower to the ground, or completely out of the child's reach. In between heights can lead to some nasty accidents.
  5.  If you are plan on doing a themed room, pick one and stick with it. You will want to make sure that it is something that appeals to you and that you always go back to that one thing for ideas. When you start to take ideas from other things that you've bought you will stray from the original theme and have a chaotic room.
  6.  Whether you are expecting or hope to be some day, keep an eye out for ideas or styles that you like in magazines or online and keep a scrapbook of them. This will help you in your decorating endeavors when the times comes that you need to bring them to life.
  7. Make sure that no matter what it is that you are buying that it is using non-toxic materials. This includes paint and fibers, everything should be safe for a baby to touch and have in their mouth, because, chances are, that's where it will end up.
  8.  Many people want to keep outlets to a bare minimum when they are designing a baby's room, but if you do that you will soon realize how many electrical things a baby needs. CD players, lamps, fans, monitors, night lights and other things all have to be plugged in. That said you will want to make sure you have enough, but also that they are covered using baby-proof covers
  9.  Always thinking of ways to save money and using space wisely will give your baby the best possible outcome for his/her room. Don't go for mini versions of things like dressers or wardrobes, because these will simply need to be replaced when the child gets older. Also double the dresser as a changing table. There is no reason to have both when the dresser top with a mat on it works just as well.
