Here you will find a large selection of Refrigerators & Eco-Friendly Refrigerators.
Tips for Buying a Refrigerator
When buying a fridge you will need to realize that you are about to buy the one appliance that uses the most energy of all of your appliance. Part of the reason for this is because it never shuts off, it's always running. Also we continually open and close the door, making the light turn on and off, and every time we open the door we require the refrigerator re-cool the warm air we just let in. Obviously there is very little that we can do to change this, but we can start to take a look at some of the best fridges out there and study the EnerGuide labels. These labels are required, by law, to be on all major appliances and you will normally find them near or attached to the price tag.
Choosing a model of refrigerator and a size will depend on your needs and the space you have. The number of people that will be using the fridge will play a huge role in the size you will need. Generally 340 liters (12 cubic feet) is perfect for one to two people. If you have three to four people you will need to move up to a 395-480 liters (14-17 cubic feet). After that, at least 55 liters (2 cubic feet) is required for each additional person. Once you've determined the proper size, you will need to look at the space available. You will want to ensure that you have at least 25mm (1 inch) on each size for proper ventilation. Normally a single door refrigerator will work for any family, and are the most energy efficient. This may not always be the case though. If you need a double door refrigerator, look into energy star fridges. This will have a higher energy rating, thus using less energy the some of the single door versions. You may also want to look into a model with an energy-saving mode.
Tips for Buying a Freezer
Buying a freezer is a great way for you stock up on sale items in the store, save left-overs longer and keep vegetables from the garden without worry of them going bad. It allows for great storage of food and the best freezers will have a lot of available space for food. When you start to look at freezers you will notice that they will have an EnerGuide label on them. This label will let you know what the energy cost for this appliance is. This tag will also inform you if this freezer you are looking at is an Energy star freezer.
These freezers will have met a government standard of energy use to earn it this rating. Before you leave to buy a freezer, you will want to measure you space. You will want to have a little bit of venting space on either side of the freezer, and also you will need to make sure you can easily get to the freezer. The size of your freezer will also depend on the size of your family. 60-125 liters per person is a good guideline to follow. If you think your family may grow soon you will want to go a little larger than that. Bigger is always a little better than too small.
You will find that there are two basic types of freezers. You can buy a stand-up freezer or a chest freezer. The stand-up, or up-right, freezers will take up significantly less room in your home, and can be easier to get into. A chest freezer uses a whole lot less energy and has a lot more storage space, but not everyone can fit it in the home. So determine what type and size of freezer will work best for you and make sure to take the few extra seconds it takes to look at the energy cost. Not only will you be helping the planet, you will be helping your check book in the long run.
