Tips for Buying a Washer

Washing machines have the greatest range of energy costs. With all of the different options out there and with the average life of a washing machine being thirteen years, you could really end up saving hundreds by choosing the right washer for you. You will want to check out their energy rating, of course, but you will also want to look at the size of the washer.

The washers will range almost as much in size as they do in energy ratings. Large washers will obviously use more energy, so if you only do small loads or only wash fine materials, consider a small, more compact model to cut down on cost.

Other than size you will notice there are front loading washers, and top loading washers.  The top loaders tend to cost less upfront but use much more energy.  The front loading washers will use significantly less hot water and cause less wear on the clothing.  These make them ideal for most people.  One thing to watch, however, is that most of these front loading washers require higher concentrated detergent.

It does cost more, but you will use less, so it comes out almost even.  Look for the energy star rating on the detergent if you aren't sure which one to use.  In addition to the style of washer, you will want to look for energy saving features like cold water washing and water level controls.

Tips for Buying a Dryer

While dryers will have a smaller energy cost range, the features on a dryer will have a larger range.  These features will help you choose the best dryer for your family.  You will still want to consult the EnerGuide label and you are encouraged to choose an Energy star dryer, but the settings are going to be the easiest way to save money on energy with a dryer.

Looking for dryers that offer “perma-press,” which is a feature that will have a five to ten minutes cool down at the end of drying to prevent wrinkles and save a little energy is one step you can take.  Another would be to find dryers that have moisture sensing capabilities.

This will allow the dryer to shut itself off when it senses the clothes are dry.  Also try using time control drying to cut down on unnecessary drying time and use the permanent press or delicate cycle on clothing that is lighter weight to use less energy when drying.

There are hundreds of options when it comes to dryers and their features and settings, taking a little time to analyze the features you will use or need along with the ones that can save you money, will make choosing the best dryer for you much easier.
