Lumber goes by a number scale from 1-5. 1 has fewer knots and usually used for construction and siding products to number 5 with numerous knots and splits and more often used for concrete forms.

The other advantage is once it's up and painted your done with it, cement boards are very low maintenance compared to traditional wood siding.
