Before buying lumber you will want to check for twisted, cracked, or if it will be a visible board you will want one with the least amount of knots. Lumber goes by a number scale from 1-5. 1 has fewer knots and usually used for construction and siding products to number 5 with numerous knots and splits and more often used for concrete forms.
If your looking for siding building supplies, some products becoming more and more popular is cement board siding. Cement boards come pre-primed and usually have wood features made into the boards. The other advantage is once it's up and painted your done with it, cement boards are very low maintenance compared to traditional wood siding.
