Window Air Conditioners

There are a few steps that you will need to take before you jump into purchasing a window air conditioner:

1. Get the size of the room that you will be cooling.  Be sure to note the ceiling height as well.

2. Take a look and measure all window openings.  Making a drawing of your windows is probably a good idea.  Knowing the type of frame that you have will also help.  Sometimes larger units will need additional support that the window frame can't offer.  Finding a unit that will fit tightly in the window space that you have is going to be essential in efficiently cooling the room.

3. Make sure there is an outlet that will be able to handle the pull from an air conditioning unit close enough to the window that you will be placing the unit in.

4. Locate the EnerGuide label on the unit you are interested in.  This tag will let you know what the energy rating of the unit is.  The higher the number, the better.  Most air conditioners will range between nine and thirteen for a rating.

5. Find a unit that offers different speeds.  Using a lower speed will save you energy and will normally make the unit quieter.

6. Go to a dealer that you trust and buy a brand you are comfortable with.  You will also want to ask about warranties and what is covered.

Looking for a central air conditioning unit is going to be a little different:

Central Air Conditioners

1. You will want to shop around.  Don't buy from the first dealer you come to and you will only want to choose from dealers that are reputable in your area.  They should always come into your home to help you decide what size and type of unit you will need for your particular situation.

2. As with the window units, you will want to look at the EnerGuide label to compare energy usage of each unit.

3. Be sure to look at the sound ratings.  You should be comfortable with the amount of noise your unit will make when it kicks on, runs and turns off.  Normally seven to ten bels is the range for a central unit.  The higher the number, the louder it will be.
