  • Call utility providers and have your services disconnected and reconnected at your new address, check off the 5 following items on this list after you call them:

      Telephone
      Cable
      Heat
      Internet
      Hydro

  • Find a good mover. If you’re hiring professional movers get written estimates from two moving companies or more. Make sure to get a signed letter, commitment of pickup and delivery dates. Check references. Ask your friends & family if they now a good mover. Make sure to check what kind of insurance they have. Purchase additional insurance if it is necessary. Take pictures of all your valuables so that if there is any damage after the move, so you can prove that the damage was done during the move.

  • If you are moving yourself reserve a truck rental.

  • Do a change of address through the post office.

  • Send out change of address cards to all your friends, family etc. or send out a bulk email detailing the change in address.

  • Call your bank, credit card companies and give them your new address in advance.

  • Call all of the companies you deal with that send personal information threw the mail and notify them to the change of address.

  • Arrange to transfer your household insurance to your new home. While you are on the phone with them, see if your belongings are covered during the moving between locations.

  • Start packing in advance. Pack items that you don’t need. Pack up things like photo albums, holiday decorations & books etc.

  • Arrange to close or transfer your bank accounts. Order cheques with your new address & phone number..

  • Stock up on packing materials. You will need boxes, tape, bubble wrap, tissue paper, markers / or labels.

  • Get organized well before your move. Have a garage sale or give away unneeded clothing and house hold items.

  • Cancel any subscriptions to magazines or newspaper or redirect them to your new address.

  • If you have any medical needs make sure that your transfer your prescriptions to a pharmacy close to were you are moving.

  • If you have pets and you are moving out of the country make sure to call immigration & have all the appropriate paper work for your pet.

  • Pack a box of items that will be needed first at the new house. Pack soap, toilet paper, an outfit to change into, tooth brush, coffee & a bottle of wine / beer / water / soda & snacks etc.

  • Note all utility meter readings move you move out or in.

  • The night before your move put all the items you want to travel with in your car in an area totally separate from were the movers are. Make sure to leave a large note on the items “ Please do not move” & let the mover know.

  • Defrost refrigerator and freezer Keep track of moving expenses & keep your receipts. Some items may be tax deductible.

  • Complete packing of all household goods for the move. Make sure boxes are clearly marked with the room they will go in, and mark boxes "Fragile".

  • If you are moving out of a rental or you are renting your place out. Put all appliance manuals & warrantees, etc in one place for the new occupants.

    On your moving day

  • Make sure your cell is charged and keep phone connected for that day.

  • Carefully move your things or watch over your movers. Make sure your instructions are understood, and that boxes are delivered to the right rooms.

  • Check all the rooms and closets to make sure you haven’t left anything behind.

  • Lock up and leave labelled keys with the landlord, new owners or real estate agent. Get to your new home before the movers. Show the movers where to put boxes and furniture.

  • Check that you've been given keys to every lock in your new home.

  • At your new home, make sure the utilities are on and working properly.

    When your move is complete

  • If you are using a mover, read your bill & inventory carefully before signing. Make sure everything is the same shape it was in before it was moved. Keep this paperwork in a safe place.

  • Unpack, then donate or flatten and recycle boxes.

  • Order in your favorite food, have a cocktail or soda to celebrate
