Questions to Ask a Storage Company

Occasionally you need a little extra room to store some of your household goods and if you are not in the position to add on to your home, then you should look into using the services of a storage company. Here are a few questions you should ask the storage company you are interested in using.

  • How much does storage cost? Determine cost will be dependant on the storage company you use as each of them have their own pricing structure that looks at the size of the space you renting, if the rental is long term or short term, and what you storing in the space. If they do not have a pricing plan that matches your needs, seek out another company.
  • Is there insurance available? Insurance protects your possessions in the event of fire, theft, or other damage and a good storage company should have insurances policies available to their renters. Make sure the policy gives you blanket protection, is backed by a major insurance firm and the premiums are competitive. If the company doesn’t offer insurance, move on.
  • What is the accessibility like? Can you back up to your storage space? Or is it on a second floor? Most places are one level with drive up access. The two storey storage units should provide you with moving trolleys and goods lifts so that you can easily move your items into the space. Ask for the hours of operation and when you can access your unit as some places only allow access during normal operating hours.
  • What security is provided? There should be a manager on site at all times during normal operating hours. Plus the storage company should protect their units with security fencing, 24 hour closed circuit security video systems, security patrols, and alarms on the individual storage units. You should protect your unit with a good, solid padlock and only you should have the key.
  • Is transport provided? Some storage companies will provide you with a truck and a driver to help you transport your possession from your home to the storage unit. There is an additional charge for this service and should be booked well in advance of needing the items out of your home. You can transport your own items or hire an outside removal company.
  • How can you pay for the unit? Cash and credit cards are generally accepted at any storage company while checks and money orders may be declined. You may also be able to pay your monthly fee via direct debit or pay for your rental online.
