Bricklayers, commonly called masons, do more than simply lay brick.  Their job also entails preparing and laying stone and concrete blocks, along with any other units.  They will use these objects to build, construct, repair or erect different structures.  These structures include patios, arches, partitions, walls, fireplaces, paving and chimneys as well as many other things.  They may even be called in to construct industrial boilers and furnaces using fire brick or some other refractor materials.

Brickwork requires particular fortifications and is incredibly heavy.  That being the case the training and quality of training that bricklayers receive in each particular type of installation is crucial.  Even the materials aren't cheap, and you are normally charged per brick, so the price can rise quickly.  Because of all of this, brickwork in generally considered an investment and should be maintained as best as possible.  That means any time any part of your masonry is loose, cracked or chipped you need to call and mason for repairs.  You will want to give them as many details as possible relating to the problem so they can assess and diagnose the problems quickly.  Doing this will also prepare them for the job ahead and allow them to provide you with an accurate estimate for the work that will need to be done.
