Tips for Choosing the Right Carpet

The many choices offered when purchasing carpet may not always be clear. Some carpeting may look similar in appearance but fluctuate considerably in price. The reason for this is the quality, grade and durability of the carpet. Carpet quality is based on the fiber used, the twist, finish and density of the fiber.

Fiber density is not about the thickness of a carpet, but the amount of yarn used and the closeness of the tufts. When inspecting carpeting, look at the backing as opposed to the surface, since the surface can be misleading. The surface density may appear good, but when spread, the base of each tuft may be far apart leaving the carpeting looking matted, which shows as wear over time.

In a rarely used room lower grade carpeting will suffice, however, in a high traffic area spending extra money for a higher grade will pay off. Although many type of carpeting are available there are three popular types which you should consider. Olefin absorbs very little moisture making it more resistant to staining and it is easy to clean. Olefin can be used indoors and outdoors because of it’s resistance to mildew and moisture.

The drawbacks are the soft fibers which can crush and show wear. Nylon is the most popular type of carpeting. The fibers are a harder grade and therefore resistant to wear. It also does not attract grease, making it a good choice for higher traffic rooms. This type of carpeting will require a good carpet protector and will need to be cleaned more often. Wool has a course natural fiber and is both soft and durable. Wool carpeting can last up to twenty or thirty years, however, wool can be stained easily, so like with nylon, it will need a carpet protecting agent applied.
