Tips for Buying Garden Tools

When shopping for garden tools, it is easy to become overwhelmed with all that is available. The choices are seemingly endless, and quality varies so much that it is hard to know where to begin. In reality there are only a few that most gardeners can't do without. For those that plan on using their tools for many years, it pays to invest in the best possible quality. Cheaper ones tend to break when put under any sort of pressure and will not stand the test of time.

Every gardener should start with a good shovel or spade. These differ in that a spade has a flat blade and a shovel's blade is pointed. They are needed for not only digging, but plenty of other lifting and moving jobs as well. Both come with long or short handles. A garden fork makes turning soil or compost easier, and are well worth having too.

A sturdy hoe is indispensable for removing weeds, digging rows for seed planting, and unlimited other jobs. There are several types available, with flat, pointed, or even heart shaped blades. While each is useful, most will find that the simple flat bladed type suits most jobs.

Trowels or diggers are a necessity for planting and transplanting. Garden rakes have many uses and are needed for the lawn as well. Lower quality plastic rakes will often last only one season. Bamboo is the better choice and will last for several years with care. Metal rakes are good for heavier duty raking, and should be made of steel. A good pair of pruning shears and loppers are needed for everything from deadheading faded flowers to cutting branches.

These are just the basic tools to start out with. There are numerous others that a gardener may find that they need in time.
